Towson Takes 2 from NSU in Softball Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TOWSON, Md. – Norfolk State's rally in the seventh inning fell short in game one, and Towson scored early in game 2 to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from the Spartan softball team on Wednesday afternoon at the Towson Softball Stadium.

The Tigers won that first game by a 6-4 score after NSU scored three runs in the top of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate. Towson had little trouble with the Spartans in the second game, though, earning an 8-0 victory in five innings.

In the first contest, Towson (13-15) scored two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth for a 6-1 lead. The Tigers hit a pair of RBI singles in the fourth, and Shelby Stracher's two-run homer highlighted the four-run fifth.

Sophomore left fielder Devon Bitler gave NSU (4-16) an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. She reached first on a bunt single, stole second and then scored on a pair of illegal pitches. After falling behind 6-1, the Spartans started a comeback in the seventh.

Senior first baseman Robyn Mitchell walked with one out and moved to second on a base hit by senior catcher Sommer Di Fulgo. Mitchell scored on sophomore shortstop Mikki Haury's RBI double, and Di Fulgo came home on an RBI groundout. Bitler then singled to score Haury, but Towson relief pitcher Megan Dejter recorded the last out for the victory.

Bitler went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Tigers scored all eight runs in game two within the first three innings. Three errors on NSU in the first inning helped Towson build a 3-0 lead. The Tigers had a pair of RBI hits in the second for two runs and then scored three more in the third inning for the final eight-run margin.

Olivia Batlazar earned the victory after pitching all five innings and allowing just a first-inning hit to senior right fielder Alina Moriarty. Olivia Yarbrough hit 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for the Tigers.

NSU will host UMES on Friday at 1 p.m. for a conference doubleheader.
