Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – Longwood scored two runs in the top of the seventh to break a tie, giving the Lancers a game 2 win and a doubleheader sweep of the Norfolk State softball team on Thursday evening at the NSU Softball Field.
The Lancers won game 1 by an 8-1 margin after scoring all eight runs in back-to-back innings. Then in game 2, Longwood had just two hits, including none in the decisive seventh inning, but came away with a 3-1 victory in a non-conference twinbill.
Senior pitcher
Liz Riley allowed just the two hits and gave up all three unearned runs in game 2 while working around seven walks. Both teams scored a run in the fifth, but then in the seventh the Lancers put a pair on the board without the benefit of a hit.
A walk and an error on a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with no outs. Casey Lifsey lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score one run, and an RBI groundout by Justina Augustine made it 3-1. LU starter Elizabeth McCarthy retired the side in order in the seventh to earn the victory, pushing the Lancers' overall record to 22-23.
NSU saw its record drop to 9-19 overall.
In that second contest, Longwood got on the board in the fifth when Lifsey doubled, stole third and then scored when the throw made its way into left field.
NSU had an answer in the bottom half of the inning, though. Senior catcher
Sommer Di Fulgo lined a single into right center and went to second on junior outfielder
Heather Dunning's infield hit. Senior outfielder
Alina Moriarty followed with a double into right center to score Di Fulgo, but the Lancers prevented any more damage when they threw out Dunning trying to score on the play.
McCarthy (17-12) did the rest, as she pitched all seven innings and allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out five.
Longwood scored all of its runs in game 2 in the third and fourth innings. Megan Baltzell's three-run homer over the left-center field fence highlighted a four-run third for the Lancers. Then in the fourth, Baltzell hit a two-run double off the top of the fence in left center. Later in the inning, Kelsey Sweeney added a two-run single for an 8-0 lead.
The Spartans then scored their lone run of the game in the fourth. Dunning reached on an infield single, and two outs later she came home on junior third baseman
Whitney Williams' sharp single up the middle off the second baseman's glove.
Freshman pitcher
Megan Przeslawski threw the last 3.2 innings in relief of starter
Marissa Marrero. Przeslawski struck out three while giving up two hits but no runs. NSU's pitching staff gave up no earned runs over the last 10.2 innings of the doubleheader.
Baltzell batted 3-for-3 with two runs and five RBI in game 1 before walking in all three plate appearances in game 2.
Williams had a pair of hits in the first contest, while Di Fulgo and Dunning each had two singles in game 2. Dunning finished the day 3-for-6. The Spartans had 10 hits as a team over the course of both games, compared to 12 for Longwood.
NSU will host Delaware State for a three-game series this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. and will also serve as Senior Day. NSU will honor its departing players approximately 20 minutes before the start of the first game.
