NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State baseball team will host a key MEAC Northern Division series this weekend as Delaware State visits
Marty L. Miller Field for three games.
Â
The teams play a single game at 5 p.m. Friday, and a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday. There is no Sunday game scheduled this week due to the Easter holiday.
Â
The Spartans (9-10, 6-3 MEAC) have won five of their last seven games overall, including five of their last six conference games, following a three-game sweep of Coppin State last weekend. NSU doubled up CSU in the series, outscoring the Eagles 28-14. Those wins, coupled with Maryland Eastern Shore's surprising three-game sweep at DSU, left NSU alone in second in the MEAC's Northern Division. Only two games separate first-place UMES (7-2 MEAC), second-place NSU (6-3) and third-place DSU (5-4) in the Northern Division standings.
Â
The Spartans continue to be led at the plate by sophomore outfielder
Denathan Dukes, who paces the offense with a .354 batting average. He is one of four Spartans over .300, along with
Syeed Mahdi (.342),
Ismael Herrera (.314) and
Ryan Kilmon (.302). Mahdi was named MEAC Co-Rookie of the Week after batting .533 (8-for-15) with five RBI in the Spartans' four games last week. Kilmon hit .583 (7-for-12) with seven RBI in the same period.
Â
DSU leads the MEAC in team batting (.282) and home runs (22), but was held to one run in a 5-1 loss to Rider on Wednesday, the Hornets' fourth straight loss. Hornet infielder Chris Gonzalez leads the MEAC with a .387 average and outfielder Charles Dailey is second with a .365 mark. The Hornets are eighth out of nine MEAC teams in earned-run average (8.60).
