Howell Wins MEAC Discus Title

2015 MEAC Outdoor Track - Day 1 Results

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Norfolk State junior Kiara Howell got off to a strong start in her quest for her third straight MEAC Outdoor Championship Most Outstanding Field Athlete honor, winning the women's discus throw on the first day of action at the conference outdoor meet Thursday at North Carolina A&T.

Howell's best throw traveled 44.47 meters (145 feet, 11 inches), 11 inches further than runner-up Andrea Aaron of Florida A&M. It was enough to clinch the first-ever individual MEAC gold medal for Howell. She has won or shared the MEAC Most Outstanding Field Athlete at the last two conference meets for accumulating the most total points of any conference field athlete, but her best finish in a single event has been three runner-up finishes (two in the discus and one in the javelin).

Howell's teammate, De'Andra Doyle, placed eighth in the discus (39.25m, 128-9).

In the only track event final contested on Thursday, junior Rachel Webb placed seventh in the 5,000 meters in a time of 18 minutes, 36.97 seconds.

Through three events Thursday, the Spartans have tallied 13 team points, good for fifth place in the women's competition. Florida A&M leads with 21 points, followed by Morgan State (17), Coppin State (16.33), Bethune-Cookman (14.33) and NSU.

Day two competition gets underway at 9 a.m. Friday.
