Spartans Stay Alive with 7-6 Walk-Off Win over UMES

Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – One day after falling victim to a ninth-inning rally, the Norfolk State baseball team pulled off one of its own on Thursday morning at Perdue Stadium, walking off with a 7-6 win over Maryland Eastern Shore to remain alive at the 2015 MEAC Baseball Championship.

The Spartans (27-15) advance to a 10 a.m. elimination game Friday against Bethune-Cookman.

With NSU trailing 6-5 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Spartans tied things up on Angelo Rosario's RBI double down the right-field line. Rosario then scored the winning run on pinch hitter Robbie Depp's fielder's choice grounder as NSU eliminated the Hawks (16-32).

Syeed Mahdi led off the bottom of the ninth by reaching on an infield single against Hawk closer Devin Repine (0-3). Rosario then lined a two-strike Repine pitch into the right-field corner to allow Mahdi to score. A groundout moved Rosario to third, and UMES intentionally walked Robbie Hiser to set up a double play possibility. But Depp grounded Repine's first pitch to shortstop, resulting in a force at second. But UMES shortstop Jordan Martin's throw to first was high, allowing Depp to reach safely and Rosario to score the winning run.

UMES led 6-2 in the sixth inning, but NSU plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to get back into it. Troy Applin walked with two outs, and after a wild pitch, scored on Ryan Kilmon's RBI single. Alex Mauricio reached on a bunt single and UMES third baseman Connor Breslin threw the ball away, letting Kilmon score. Mikey Bruno then chased UMES starter Tanner Whiteman from the game with an RBI single to bring the Spartans within 6-5.

NSU freshman reliever Michael Parmentier (3-1) kept his team in it with a clutch performance out of the bullpen. Parmentier pitched the final four innings without allowing a baserunner. He struck out four of the 12 batters he faced.

The Hawks jumped out on top quickly against NSU starter Devin Hemmerich with single runs in the first and second innings. Joshua James' sacrifice fly in the first and Breslin's RBI single in the second got UMES off to a 2-0 start. But the Spartans tied it in the third as Mahdi doubled in Mauricio and Rosario hit a sacrifice fly to score Bruno.

The Hawks reclaimed the lead on Hamrick's RBI single in the top of the fourth, then added three more in the top of the fifth on Greg Turlik's bases-loaded fielder's choice and a two-run single by Skylar Murray to make it 6-2.

Rosario went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Mahdi was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Mauricio scored a pair of runs.

Hamrick and Dattilo had two hits apiece for the Hawks.
