NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Tasia Baxter just missed matching her MEAC-leading mark in the pole vault, placing third in that event for the Spartan women's track and field team over the weekend at the Captains Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University.

Baxter cleared 10 feet, 5.25 inches in the pole vault. Her top mark this year is 10-6 from the Hampton tri-meet earlier this month, which leads the conference pole vaulters by a wide margin.

In other field events, sophomore
Brianna Hayes continued her recent success in the high jump. She cleared 5 feet, 5 inches, which matched the top height cleared in the event at CNU. She placed third based on number of misses.

The Spartans had several strong performances on the track.
Crystal Green won the 200-meter hurdles (29.18 seconds), while the 4x200 relay team of
Tyrika Lee,
Janay Fields,
Nickheila John and
Chazmin Fullwood placed second in 1:42.45. That group, along with the winners from Hampton, both broke the previous facility record.
Lee earned two other top-five finishes. She came in fourth in the 60 meters (7.77) and third in the 200 (25.60). Fullwood also recorded a top-five in an individual event, taking third in the 400 meters in 59.48 seconds.
NSU competes in the Penn State National meet next Friday and Saturday.
