Spartans Battle but Fall to Bucknell on Saturday, 5-2

Match Results

NORFOLK
, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team won at the middle two spots in the singles lineup and nearly came away with victories at two other positions, but the Spartans ultimately fell to Bucknell by a 5-2 score on Saturday evening at ODU's Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

Freshman Dan Dumitrascu earned one of those wins for NSU (0-5), topping Bryan Adams by a 6-2, 6-4 score the No. 3 singles position. Sophomore Antonio Pejic also earned the victory, this one of the come-from-behind variety. He lost the first set to Andrei Vitiuc, 6-1, at the No. 4 position. Pejic, though, responded by winning the next two sets, 6-2 and 7-5.

Bucknell (5-4) picked up tight wins at the No. 1 and 5 positions as well. Nick Bybel topped freshman Benedikt Henning at the top spot in the lineup, at first winning the first set by a 7-6 score, including 7-4 in the tiebreaker. Henning came back to win the second set, 7-5, before Bybel earned a 6-4 win in the third set.

Sophomore Fatehdeep Singh won the first set of his match at No. 5 singles against Ben Gerber by a 6-4 score. Gerber, though, won the second set, 6-4, as well as the third set tiebreaker, 10-4.

"Tonight Bucknell was the better team," said head coach Worth Richardson. "We had our opportunities but were just not able to take advantage of them. The guys fought hard and will now hit the road to take on Wake Forest, a top 5 team, which should be a great experience for us."

The Bison also claimed the victory at No. 2 singles, where Daniel Wright topped freshman Flavian Fernandez by scores of 7-5 and 6-0.

Bucknell also won at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles because of NSU's short-handed lineup. The Bison won the other two doubles matches by identical 6-4 scores as well. Bybel and Adams defeated Henning and Fernandez at the No. 1 spot, while Wright and Gerber did the same over Pejic and Singh at the No. 2 position.

NSU will travel to Wake Forest on Sunday to play a match at 5 p.m.
