CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 18-ranked Virginia swept the Norfolk State women's tennis team by a 7-0 score on Sunday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center.
The Cavaliers improved to 7-3 on the season while dropping the Spartans to 1-5.
In an overall contest that took an hour and a half, NSU's closest match in doubles came at the No. 3 position, where junior
Liza Gordeeva and freshman
Marta Gomar fell to Stephanie Nauta and Cassie Mercer by a 6-2 score.
In the other two matches, the No. 23 tandem of Danielle Collins and Meghan Kelley downed junior
Ana Popovic and sophomore
Dajana Cvjetkovic by a 6-1 margin at the No. 1 slot. Julia Elbaba and Skylar Morton earned a 6-0 victory at the second position over seniors
Andrea Macchiavello and
Mafalda Lhorca.
The Spartans faced two ranked opponents in singles as well. Gomar dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to No. 69-ranked Nauta at the No. 2 position, while No. 45 Morton swept Cvjetkovic by scores of 6-0 and 6-0 at the top spot in the lineup.
At the next two lineups spots, Victoria Olivarez handed Macchiavello a 6-0, 6-1 loss at the No. 3 position, while Kelley downed Gordeeva, 6-0, 6-2, at the fourth slot. At No. 5 singles, Erica Susi took care of Popovic, 6-0 and 6-1, while Taylor Wingo picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 position.
"It was a great experience to play another outstanding university in the commonwealth and one of the best teams in the country," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "The weather was wonderful, and we gained valuable outdoor match experience as we head into the outdoor portion of our season."
NSU will play several teams in central Florida beginning March 9 during the school's spring break week.
