ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Norfolk State rallied after losing the doubles point to win four singles matches for the overall match win, 4-3, over Creighton on Wednesday afternoon in women's tennis action in Florida.
Competing at Sanlando Park during their spring break week, the Spartans pulled out two of those four singles wins in third-set tiebreakers. That dropped Creighton to 6-5 on the year, while NSU ran its record to 2-5 overall.
Freshman
Marta Gomar earned one of those hard-fought wins, taking out Darby Rosette at the No. 2 position. Gomar took the first set, 7-5, before Rosette won the second, 6-2. In the third-set tiebreaker, though, Gomar won by a 10-5 score to tie the match at 3-3.
The contest came down to senior
Mafalda Lhorca at No. 6 singles. She easily won the first set, 6-1, over Karlin Naslund, but her Creighton opponent earned a 7-5 victory in the second. With the match on the line, Lhorca scored a 10-3 third-set tiebreaker victory to give NSU the overall win.
The Spartans also won at No. 4 and 5 singles, with junior
Liza Gordeeva defeating Claire Embree at the third slot, 6-1 and 6-2. Junior
Ana Popovic, meanwhile, downed Sam Anderson at the fifth position, 6-3 and 6-4.
The Bluejays kept it close by winning the top spot in the lineup and the No. 3 position. Ashley Ishimura downed sophomore
Dajana Cvjetkovic at No. 1 singles, 6-2 and 6-3, while Katherine Nelsen topped senior
Andrea Macchiavello, 6-4 and 6-3, at the third slot.
Gomar and Gordeeva also won in doubles, earning a 6-2 win over Nelsen and Michaela Henne at the third position.
The Bluejays, though, ultimately won the doubles point by winning the other two matches. At No. 1 doubles, Ishimura and Rosette topped Cvjetkovic and Popovic, 6-1, while Embree and Anderson posted a 6-2 win at the second position over Lhorca and Macchiavello.
NSU will continue its trip through Florida on Thursday when the Spartans play Ball State at noon.
