DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore
Antonio Pejic and freshman
Benedikt Henning each won in singles during a 5-2 loss for the Norfolk State men's tennis team against host Bethune-Cookman on Sunday morning.
Â
The Spartans closed out their spring break trip with a matchup against the MEAC Southern Division Wildcats at City Island Courts. Pejic ended up winning his third straight match while running his singles record to 7-4.
Â
It took a response after Jose Plazas won the first set, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Pejic did exactly that, winning 6-3 in the second set and 10-5 in the third-set tiebreaker.
Â
Henning won at the top spot in the lineup for NSU (1-10), including a tiebreaker win in the first set against Ward Gtari. Henning won the first set, 7-6, including 7-4 in the tiebreaker. He then took the second set, 6-4.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (6-9) won both contested doubles matches. Alexander Chepik and Greg Almeida topped Henning and freshman
Flavian Fernandez at the No. 1 position, 6-4, while Gtari and Plazas defeated Pejic and sophomore
Fatehdeep Singh, 6-2.
Â
The Wildcats won the third doubles position and sixth singles slot due to NSU's shorthanded lineup. They also took the other three singles contested matches. Chepik pulled out a 6-2, 6-4 decision over NSU freshman
Dan Dumitrascu at the No. 2 position.
Â
Almeida also topped Fernandez at No. 4 singles, 6-2 and 6-2, while Alvaro Barrera came away with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Singh at the fifth spot.
"Unfortunately, our youth was on full display as we took on our first MEAC team of the season," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "Ultimately I think this is a good learning experience and will prepare us for divisional play."
NSU will return home to host Fairmont State at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday followed by UMES later in the day at 2 p.m. at the NSU Tennis Complex.
