North Carolina A&T Rallies to Win Twice over NSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina A&T used a big rally in the sixth inning of game 1 and another comeback in the seventh inning of game 2 to sweep a doubleheader from the Norfolk State softball team on Wednesday afternoon at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.

The Aggies scored nine runs in the sixth inning of the first game to win 10-5. Then in the second contest, A&T erased a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs to win in walk-off fashion, 7-6.

NSU (5-10) only had three hits in the first contest. Thanks in part to three errors on the Aggies, the Spartans scored four runs in the top of the first inning.

A walk and an error put two runners on, and one run came home on a pair of fielder's choices. After A&T (10-12) got the second out of the inning on a force at home, two straight errors on balls hit in the infield plated three more runs for the Spartans.

Another Aggie error in the third inning made it 5-0 in favor of NSU. The Aggies got one run back in the fourth on an RBI groundout and then exploded for seven hits and nine runs in the sixth inning.

Three straight RBI hits scored the first three runs of the inning. NSU got an out at home before A&T hit another RBI single to tie the game at 5-5. Then with two outs, an error extended the inning, which was followed by yet another RBI single. Raven Gray capped the inning with a three-run homer for the final 10-5 margin.

Zadaisha Young-Waddell (3-7) earned the win for the Aggies, giving up three hits and five unearned runs in all seven innings.

NSU's bats did much better in the second game, finishing with 11 hits. It was the Aggies, though, who struck first.

Janika May hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first for an early 2-0 lead. The Aggies made it 4-0 after a pair of RBI singles in the second.

NSU did get two runs back in the third. A walk and an error put two runners on, and eventually senior Whitney Williams hit a two-run single with the bases loaded. Then in the fifth, the Spartans went ahead thanks to three more runs on extra base hits.

Sophomore Seana Moriarty and Williams hit back-to-back doubles to open the frame, and one out later freshman Stephanie Davenport doubled to score Williams. Then with two outs, senior Megan Dunning smacked a two-bagger to left for a 5-4 Spartan lead.

NSU had five doubles in the game.

Dunning hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to make it 6-4 before the Aggies rallied with the final three runs in the bottom of the frame. They loaded the bases with three singles, and then with two outs, Jillian Nobles tripled to right center to score all three runs and end the game.

Williams finished 2-for-4 with three RBI in the second game. Dunning also drove in two runs, and Moriarty had a pair of hits. Williams scored two runs in the first contest as well.

NSU will begin conference play this weekend at home. The Spartans will host Coppin State for a pair of games on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. at the NSU Softball Field.
