RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore
Tasia Baxter set a new personal-best in the pole vault and
Kiara Howell placed in the top five in three different events as the Norfolk State women's track and field team opened its outdoor season at the Fred Hardy Invitational hosted by the University of Richmond last weekend.
Baxter cleared 10 feet, 11.75 inches to place sixth in the pole vault. He previous outdoor best was 10-6, which she accomplished in high school.
Howell won the shot put (43-6), took third in the discus (147-8) and placed fifth in the hammer throw (140-8) as part of a strong day for the Spartan field athletes. In other field events, sophomore
Brianna Hayes placed second in the high jump with a top effort of 5-3.
On the track, many of NSU's top performances were turned in by freshmen.
Tyrika Lee placed third in the 200 meters (25.29 seconds) and fourth in the 100 meters (12.31), one place behind teammate and classmate
Janay Fields, who clocked a 12.16. Another Spartan freshman,
Chazmin Fullwood, took eighth in the 400 meters in a time of 57.61 seconds, while rookie
Taejah Robertson was fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (14.43).
The team of Fullwood, Fields,
Jermyriah Jones and
Crystal Green capped the meet with a victory in the 4x400 relay in a time of 3 minutes, 55.50 seconds. Fields, Lee, Robertson and
Jazmine Vaughan placed second in the 4x100 meter relay (48.00 seconds) earlier in the meet.
The Spartans remain in-state for their next competition, the Colonial Relays at the College of William & Mary this Friday and Saturday.
