Longwood Starts Fast, Holds off NSU 11-9

Box Score FARMVILLE, Va. – Alex Lewis went 4-for-5 with three runs batted in, and host Longwood scored six runs in the second inning to earn an 11-9 win over Norfolk State on Tuesday evening at Buddy Bolding Stadium.

Roger Hall had three hits and Syeed Mahdi went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple for the Spartans (9-13).

NSU scored in the top of the first inning on Hall's two-out RBI single. But the Lancers (14-11) tied the game at 1-1 on a Lewis single in the bottom of the first, then scored six times in the bottom of the second inning to break the tie. Longwood took advantage of two walks and three wild pitches in the inning and got three consecutive doubles, a two-run double by C.J. Roth and run-scoring two-baggers by Michael Osinski and Lewis.

NSU started the climb back into the game with a four-run fifth. The Lancer pitchers had control problems of their own in the inning, issuing six walks. Mahdi added an RBI double in the frame, which saw the Spartans cut their deficit to 8-5.

Longwood, however, scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-out, two-run single from Janos Briscoe to stretch the lead back to six, 11-5.

Mahdi tripled and scored in the sixth as the Spartans got back within four, at 11-7. NSU made it even tighter in the ninth as Hall led off with a single – his third hit of the night – and Alex Mauricio doubled him in. Pinch hitter Kevin Granger followed with an RBI single to cut Longwood's lead to 11-9. But reliever Ryan Jones, the fifth Longwood pitcher of the night, struck out the next two batters to preserve the Lancers' victory.

Chase Anderson (3-2) took the loss for the Spartans, allowing five hits and seven runs – six earned – in two innings pitched. He walked five and struck out one.

Allen Ellis (1-0), the third of Longwood's pitchers, was the winner for the Lancers. He allowed two runs in 1.1 innings of relief. Jones picked up the save.

Mahdi, Hall, Denathan Dukes and Brian Beard scored two runs each for NSU. Beard stole two bases and Dukes had one.

The Spartans play a three-game MEAC series at Coppin State this Saturday and Sunday in Baltimore, Md.
