WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team did not even need to finish the last two matches of the day, defeating Howard by a 4-1 score in a conference matchup on Friday afternoon at the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation's (WTEF) indoor courts at the Tennis, Education and Community Center in southeast Washington, D.C.

The victory kept NSU undefeated in MEAC Northern Division play at 4-0 with just two matches left. The Spartans also improved to 6-9 overall with their fourth win in the past five contests.

Norfolk State earned the doubles point after posting victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. The Spartans also picked up wins at the second, third and fourth slots in singles to come away with the overall match victory. Howard (6-5 overall, 3-1 MEAC) got its only point of the contest after winning No. 1 singles in three sets.

Junior
Liza Gordeeva and freshman
Marta Gomar each won both of their matchups. They teamed up at No. 3 doubles to defeat Sajela Harlow and Christina Joynes by a 6-1 score. On top of that, seniors
Mafalda Lhorca and
Andrea Macchiavello downed Umarah Mughnee and Kindha Nasef by a 6-2 margin at the second doubles position to give NSU the doubles point.

Gordeeva, Gomar and Macchiavello won in the middle of the order to complete the win. Macchiavello had the easiest time, downing Nasef, 6-2 and 6-3, at the fourth singles slot. At one spot higher in the lineup, Gomar took care of Nicole Hutchinson by scores of 7-5 and 6-3.

Gordeeva earned a 6-3 first set win over Jessica Josiah at No. 2 singles before winning the second-set tiebreaker, 7-3, to win the set by a 7-6 score.

Josiah and Stacey Roheman defeated the Spartan duo of junior
Ana Popovic and sophomore
Dajana Cvjetkovic, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles. Roheman also defeated Cvjetkovic in singles at the first position. Cvjetkovic actually took the first set, 7-5, before Roheman won the next two, 6-2 and 6-4.

Popovic and Lhorca competed at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, and were late in the first set of their matches when both were called due to NSU winning the overall match by that point.

"We knew this would be battle and it was," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "The ladies stepped up in most of the pressure situations and were rewarded for doing so."

The Spartans will stay in the area to play at Navy on Sunday at 2 p.m.
