Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Devin Hemmerich pitched into the eighth inning and Norfolk State made a three-run second inning stand up as the Spartans defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 3-1 to complete a weekend sweep of the Hawks on Sunday at
Marty L. Miller Field.
Hemmerich (2-4) struck out seven in 7.2 innings of work and
Michael Parmentier got the final four outs for his second save of the year for NSU (16-16 overall, 10-4 MEAC North), which remains in sole possession of first place in its division after winning its four straight MEAC series.
NSU plated all its runs in the bottom of the second off UMES starter Chris Melrath (0-4).
Alex Mauricio walked to lead off the inning and
Chase Anderson followed with a single.
Tony Leite then laced a long two-run double into the left-field corner. After another wild pitch,
Chris Ford's sacrifice fly scored Leite to make it 3-0.
After being held scoreless for the first 21 innings of the series, the Hawks finally scratched across a run in the sixth. Justin Somerville hit a one-out double off Hemmerich. With two outs, Jamison Trower's single scored Somerville to bring UMES within 3-1.
The Hawks threatened again in the eighth. Grayson Trower led off with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Hemmerich then induced a popout from Somerville, but hit Mike Escanilla to put a second runner on base with two outs. NSU brought in Parmentier from the bullpen and he promptly struck out Jamison Trower to end the threat.
Parmentier retired the side in order in the ninth with a pair of groundouts sandwiching another strikeout.
Hemmerich allowed just five hits and one run with one walk in his longest outing of the season. Sunday marked his second straight start with seven strikeouts, and fifth with at least this many this year. His quality start capped off a strong weekend of pitching for the Spartans. The NSU staff allowed just 13 hits and one run while striking out 24 in 25 innings against UMES.
Five different Spartans accounted for NSU's five hits on Sunday. Leite drove in two runs and had one of the team's three doubles.
Justin Lee and
Kyle Vaas had the others.
Melrath (0-4) took the loss for UMES, allowing four hits and three runs over seven innings pitched.
The Spartans are back at home this Tuesday in a 5 p.m. game against William & Mary.
