HAMPTON, Va. – Kiara Howell won the javelin throw Saturday and improved upon her season-best mark in that event as the NSU women's track and field team competed at the Hampton Relays.
Howell's best throw went 133 feet, 6 inches, some eight inches better than her previous best throw this year from the Colonial Relays. Howell remains the No. 3 javelin thrower in the conference this year.
Howell's win was the only first-place finish for the Spartans at the meet, but NSU had several other top-five finishes.
Brianna Hayes cleared 5-4.25 to finish as runner-up in the high jump.
On the track, freshman
Janay Fields took fifth place in the 100-meter dash (12.19 seconds), sixth in the 200 (24.85) and ran a leg on the third-place 4x100 meter relay team. Fields,
Jazmine Vaughan,
Taejah Robertson and
Tyrika Lee ran a season-best 4x100 time of 47.18 seconds Saturday.
Robertson also notched a runner-up finish Saturday, taking second place in the 100 meter hurdles (14.25). In addition,
Crystal Green captured fourth place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1 minutes, 7.8 seconds.
The Spartans head out of state this weekend for the Morgan State Legacy Meet in Baltimore, Md.
