Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Matt Outman pitched seven shutout innings to win his fifth straight start, and the Spartans scored seven runs in the first three innings en route to a 10-0 victory over Coppin State on Saturday evening at
Marty L. Miller Field.
Alex Mauricio went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, and
Roger Hall and
Chase Anderson had two hits and two RBI apiece for the Spartans (18-16, 11-4 MEAC North), who extended their winning streak to five games. NSU also posted its third shutout in the last five games.
Due to intermittent rain earlier in the day, the start time was delayed twice, first from 1 to 3 p.m., then from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The teams then opted to play just a single game Saturday instead of the scheduled doubleheader.
Despite the delayed start, the Spartans got off to a fast start. Dukes doubled to lead off the first inning. With two outs, Mauricio singled through the left side of the infield to allow Dukes to score. A two-out error allowed another run to cross the plate, and then Anderson's two-run single doubled the lead to 4-0.
Hall's two-out RBI single in the second frame increased the NSU edge to 5-0. NSU tacked on two more in the third, on a
Chris Ford RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Dukes.
Syeed Mahdi blasted an RBI triple and scored on Hall's single in the seventh, and
Justin Lee's long RBI double in the eighth scored Anderson from first and help NSU walk off due to the 10-run rule.
Outman allowed just three hits, walked three and struck out six batters. The victory was the 22nd of his career, moving him into sole possession of second place in school history, one shy of record holder J.R. Wilkerson.
Lee also had two hits Saturday, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. The Spartans outhit CSU, 14-4.
The teams play a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday.
