Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State continued its dominant pitching of late, holding Coppin State to just one run and eight hits in a 2-0, 4-1 doubleheader sweep of the Eagles on Sunday at
Marty L. Miller Field.
The wins helped NSU (20-16, 13-4 MEAC) run its winning streak to seven games as the Spartans completed their second straight weekend sweep of a MEAC North opponent.
Just like last weekend, the Spartans allowed just one run in a weekend sweep. On the heels of a combined four-hit shutout by
Matt Outman and
Chase Anderson on Saturday, juniors
Devin Hemmerich and
Jonathan Mauricio took their turns in stymying the Eagles (9-30, 6-12) on Sunday. Hemmerich allowed just three hits over seven innings in game one Sunday, while
Michael Parmentier closed out the win with two scoreless frames in relief.
In game two,
Jonathan Mauricio (4-2) yielded just one run on three hits over five innings pitched, before his younger brother, Alex, finished out the win with two scoreless innings.
In the opener, Hemmerich (3-4) matched his season high with eight strikeouts and won his second consecutive start. NSU got the only offense it needed in the fourth.
Roger Hall led off with a double, took third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch by CSU starter Devin Sutorious. With two outs,
Brian Beard reached on an infield single and scored on
Chase Anderson's double to the left-center field gap.
The Eagles' best chance to score came in the sixth inning. CSU loaded the bases thanks to an error, a walk and a hit batter. But Hemmerich struck out John O'Dwyer to keep the Eagles scoreless.
Parmentier notched his fourth save of the season and third in the last week by pitching two scoreless innings in relief of Hemmerich. Parmentier allowed one hit and one walk while fanning two hitters, helping NSU clinch its seven shutout of the year.
Hall was 2-for-3 for the Spartans, the only player from either team to record more than one hit in game one.
In the nightcap, Mauricio was staked to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Denathan Dukes led off the inning with a single and later scored on Hall's triple to center field.
But the Eagles finally managed a run in the fifth to tie the game. John O'Dwyer led off with a single and stole second. After a pair of popups, Andrew O'Dwyer singled in his brother to tie the game.
But the Spartans quickly had the answer. Dukes reached on a one-out bunt single and took second on a balk by CSU starter Aaron Rea (1-8). Dukes scored all the way from second when the Eagles couldn't turn a double play.
Robbie Depp kept the rally going with a single, and
Alex Mauricio doubled home two runs to increase NSU's lead to 4-1.
Alex Mauricio then moved to the mound in relief of his brother in the sixth. He breezed through two scoreless innings, allowing just one bunt single and striking out two runners, to pick up his second save of the year.
The Spartans' pitching staff allowed just 12 hits and one run over the weekend, and has yielded just 25 hits and two runs over its last six MEAC games.Â
Dukes went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in game two.
The Spartans host Longwood at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
