Longwood Pulls Away Late, Tops NSU 13-5

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Tyler Wirsu pitched 7.1 strong innings and Longwood pulled away late to down Norfolk State by a 13-5 score on Tuesday night at Marty L. Miller Field.

The loss snapped NSU's seven-game winning streak, dropping the Spartans to 20-17 overall. The Lancers improved to 24-18.

Both teams scored in the first inning. Longwood plated two runs thanks to two hits, an Alex Lewis groundout and a passed ball against the Spartans. NSU cut its deficit in half as Angel Rosario tripled and scored on Roger Hall's groundout in the bottom of the frame.

The Spartans tied the game in the third thanks to a balk on Wirsu. That allowed Tony Leite, who had doubled earlier in the inning, to score from third.

But the Lancers reclaimed the lead for good in the fourth thanks to RBI singles by Sammy Miller and Brandon Harvell, giving Longwood a 4-2 lead. The Spartans got a run back on Rosario's fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth, but Longwood slowly pulled away with five runs combined in the sixth, seventh and eighth frames. Lewis hit a two-run double in the eighth to extend the Lancers' lead to 9-3.

C.J. Roth's three-run homer capped a four-run ninth for Longwood. The Spartans added a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to close the scoring.

Jones (2-3) took the loss for NSU, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings of work. He struck out five batters.

Wirsu (1-1) gave up five hits and three runs, striking out four.

Hall had two RBI for the Spartans. Lewis, Miller, Harvell and Connor Bastaich had two hits each while Lewis and Roth drove in three apiece for the Lancers.

NSU hosts Delaware State for a four-game series this Saturday and Sunday at Marty L. Miller Field.
