NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State baseball team dropped a 9-0 decision to the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, in an exhibition game on Tuesday evening at Harbor Park.
The sixth game in the past seven years between the two teams was more about the exposure than the result for Norfolk State.
"We are happy about the experience our student athletes get to get, and hopefully it inspires them to play even harder," said NSU head coach
Claudell Clark. "It is a nice experience on the grand stage."
Freshman
Chris Ford recorded Norfolk State's lone hit when he doubled down the left field line with two outs in the fifth inning. Junior
Denathan Dukes and senior
Kyle Vaas were the only other Spartans to reach base. Dukes walked to open the game and quickly stole second before Tides starter Zach Phillips retired the next three batters.
Senior
Matt Outman, junior
Devin Hemmerich, sophomore
Alex Mauricio and freshman
Chase Anderson combined to toss 4.1 scoreless innings for Norfolk State. They allowed one hit and four walks while striking out four.
The Tides were sparked by
Steve Tolleson and
Joey Terdoslavich, who teamed up for three hits and six RBI.
The Tides tacked on four runs in the third. Tolleson's double got things going, bringing home
Michael Almanzar. That was followed by Terdoslavich's three-run blast to right field, scoring
Francisco Pena and Tolleson.
Terdoslavich later added a solo home run in the fifth, again over the pavilion in right field and again possibly into the Elizabeth River.
Six relief pitchers didn't loosen their grasp on the win as they finished off the game for the Tides.
Oliver Drake faced four batters in relief, while
Chaz Roe recorded three outs to aid the victory.
Norfolk State will travel to Dover, Del., for a three-game weekend series beginning this Saturday at 1 p.m.
