Postgame Interview
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Albert Funderburke ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns, including a 57-yarder in the fourth quarter, and Jonathan Dunn rushed for two more scores to lift No. 13 ranked William & Mary to a 35-10 win over Norfolk State on Saturday evening at Zable Stadium.
The loss was the second in a row for the Spartans (1-2), both coming at the hands of top-15 ranked FCS teams. NSU fell to then-No. 2 Richmond last week before concluding its non-conference schedule against W&M (2-1).
The Tribe rushed for 277 yards, including an additional 89 from Dunn to complement Funderburke's big day. W&M held a 459-237 edge in total offense.
Norfolk State took a short-lived lead when quarterback
Greg Hankerson scored on a 26-yard touchdown run with 5:49 left in the first quarter. The play came on a 4th-and-5 scramble by Hankerson and capped a seven-play, 94-yard scoring march for the Spartans. The drive included a 50-yard completion from Hankerson to
George Wahee, NSU's longest play from scrimmage this year to date.
But the efficient Tribe offense scored on its next three possessions to take a 21-7 lead. Funderburke scored on a 1-yard TD run with 1:48 left in the first quarter to tie the game. Dunn then scored on TD runs of 16 and 1 yard out on consecutive W&M possessions in the second quarter to give the Tribe a 21-7 edge.
NSU kicker
Cameron Marouf connected on his first field goal of the season, a 36-yarder, to cut the Spartans' deficit to 21-10 later in the period. Freshman safety
Bobby Price made sure the score stayed that way by intercepting a pass in the end zone with less than a minute left in the second quarter.
But Funderburke scored on a 3-yard run to stretch the Tribe lead to 28-10 at the 3:10 mark of the third quarter before scoring on a 57-yard scamper in the fourth, while NSU was unable to score in the second half.
Hankerson completed 13-of-25 passes for 125 yards and also led the Spartans in rushing, with 43 yards. Tight end
Demetreus Ferebee caught a career-high four passes to lead the team.
W&M quarterback Steve Cluley passed for 179 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. NSU defensive backs Price and
Sandy Chapman picked off passes for the Spartan secondary.
NSU opens MEAC play next Saturday when North Carolina Central visits Dick Price Stadium for a 2 p.m. game, the first of two straight home contests for the Spartans.
