CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman
Martha Bissah made her Norfolk State debut by winning the mile run and running a leg on the Spartans' winning 4x400 meter relay team as the NSU women's track and field team returned from a long layoff at the Art & Linda Maillet UNC Open on Saturday.
Â
After four weeks off for the semester break and another week delay due to a snowstorm that kept the Spartans at home last weekend, NSU finally resumed its indoor season in Chapel Hill. NSU posted 10 top-five finishes at UNC, with Bissah (two),
Candice Higgins (two) and senior
Nickheila John (three) Â having a hand in more than one.
Â
Bissah won the mile in a time of 5 minutes, 9.87 seconds. Junior
Candice Higgins was third in the same event, in 5:13.27.
Â
John placed third in the 400 meters (59.00) and fourth in the 200 meters (25.81) to lead the sprinters. John, Bissah and Higgins teamed with freshman
Jada Key to earn the Spartans' other event win during the meet in the 4x400 meter relay. The quartet finished in 3:58.55, nearly 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Winston-Salem State.
Â
Sophomore
Taejah Robertson, who was also running in her first meet of the season, was the top collegiate finisher in the 60-meter hurdles. Her time of 8.74 seconds was just .02 shy of her PR, and was good for a second-place finish behind unattached athlete Cheyenne Hutchinson.
Â
Spartan freshmen took two of the top five places in the 5,000 meters, with Carolina Samoei (19.49.21) taking third and
Ashah Koech (21:09.71) fifth.
Â
NSU had two top-five efforts in field events.
Tasia Baxter was fourth in the pole vault (9 feet, 10 inches) and
Ashaila Bunch took fifth in the triple jump (34-7).
Â
The Spartans will be back in action next weekend at Liberty University.
