NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – In its final tune-up before the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championship, the Spartan women's track and field team compiled four event victories on Saturday at the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University.
Senior
Nickheila John accounted for two of those wins. John won both the 200-meter dash (25.36 seconds) and 400-meter dash (58.17). In the 200, John led a 1-2-3 NSU sweep, with
Janay Fields (25.85) placing second and
Tyrika Lee (25.95) taking third.
In addition to her success in the 200 meters, Lee also won the 60 meters in 7.81 seconds. Freshman
Martha Bissah notched the Spartans' other win on Saturday, crossing the line first in the 3,000 meters in a time of 10 minutes, 11.60 seconds. It was the third time in four meets that Bissah has won her individual event, and she posted the MEAC's second-fastest 3,000m time this indoor season in the process.
Other top-five finishes were turned in Saturday by
Candice Higgins in the 3,000m (second place – 10:28.69),
Jada Key in the 400m (third place – 59.26),
T'Nai Wells in the 60m hurdles (fourth – 9.05) and
Brianna Hayes in the high jump (5 feet, 1 inch).
The Spartans will have a weekend off before traveling to Landover, Md., for the 2017 MEAC Indoor Championships Feb. 16-18.
