PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Freshman designated hitter
Stephen Baughan recorded five hits and five runs batted in over the course of Saturday's doubleheader sweep as the Spartans notched wins of 10-4 and 11-9 over Maryland Eastern Shore at Hawk Stadium.
Baughan hit three doubles on the day, a back-breaking three-run double in the fifth inning of game one and two doubles in a 3-for-3 effort in game two for NSU (8-12, 3-2 MEAC North), which has won three straight games and four of five.
Alex Mauricio (2-2) allowed just two hits – both infield singles – and one unearned run to get the win in the opener. He did not allow a hit until Jordan Martin's lead-off roller to short in the sixth. Martin moved up on a passed ball and scored two groundouts later, the only run charged to Mauricio's record. Mauricio walked two and struck out six.
The Spartans took an early 3-0 lead in the first.
Andre' Moore and
Roger Hall hit consecutive singles to start the rally, and
Justin Burrell doubled home Moore for the game's first run. The Hawks (3-17, 1-4) then committed a two-out error on Baughan's fly ball that allowed two more runs to score.
NSU scored four more times in the fifth to break the game open, all with two outs. Moore walked with two outs and stole second base. He came around to score when the throw down to second skipped into center and past the center fielder.
The Spartans weren't done in the inning.
Roger Hall doubled, Burrell walked and
Tony Leite reached on an error before Baughan cleared the bases with a three-run double to left. Burrell and Leite added RBI singles in the seventh, and Terrance Pinkston scored in the eighth on a double play to cap the scoring for the Spartans.
Baughan, Burrell and Hall had two hits each in the opener for the Spartans, who outhit the Hawks 12-4. Baughan knocked in three runs, while Burrell and Hall scored three times each.
Game two was a see-saw contest, with the Spartans taking control with nine runs in the third and fourth innings combined, then holding on down the stretch of the seven-inning matchup.
Both teams scored two runs in the first. Burrell hit an RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch, but MDES tied the game with two unearned runs in the bottom of the frame.
Baughan hit an RBI single to spark a four-run third, which also included a squeeze bunt by Moore and another error on the Hawks. MDES responded with three in the bottom of the third to cut the NSU deficit to 6-5.
The Spartans gained breathing room with five more runs in the fourth. Baughan got the scoring started with an RBI double and fellow freshman
Adam Collins doubled in two more. Pinch hitter Robbie Depp tacked on an RBI single to stretch the NSU lead to 11-5.
The Hawks scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to get within 11-7, then scored two more in the sixth. But reliever
Michael Parmentier limited the damage in the sixth, then pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the win and earn his second save of the season.
Baughan was 3-for-3 in game two and Leite batted 2-for-4. For the doubleheader, Baughan went 5-for-7 with five RBI, while Hall and Burrell both had three hits and five runs scored. Collins had three RBI in the nightcap.
Chase Anderson (2-2) earned the win in relief in the nightcap. He allowed three runs in 2.2 innings out of bullpen and struck out five. Parmentier struck out three and did not allow a hit in his two innings of relief.
The teams complete their series with a single game at noon on Sunday.
