NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore right hander
Chase Anderson struck out a career-high 10 batters in his first complete game, and Norfolk State set a school record with 12 stolen bases in the Spartans' 9-3 win over William & Mary on Wednesday night at
Marty L. Miller Field.
Brian Beard and
Andre' Moore each went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases for the Spartans (15-14), who won for the sixth time in their last seven games. It was NSU's third win in the last five meetings with the Tribe (18-16).
Anderson, typically a reliever for NSU, easily surpassed his longest previous career outing of five innings. He allowed three runs, all in the first inning, and scattered seven hits and four walks in his first start of the season and fifth in his career.
The Tribe struck for three runs in the first on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Hall and a two-run homer by Ryder Miconi. But the Spartans quickly answered with three of their own in the bottom of the first.
Alex Mauricio hit an RBI single and
Justin Burrell laced a two-out, two-run single to tie the game.
The score remained that way until the fifth. The Spartans capitalized on two hits, two hit batters, a walk and three steals to piece together a four-run rally.
Johnny Mayer walked to lead off the inning, stole second and took third on a wild pitch before scoring on Moore's bunt single. Beard was hit by a pitch, and he and Moore executed a double steal. Moore scored on a wild pitch and Beard came home on
Roger Hall's RBI single.
Alex Maurico, who walked earlier in the frame, also scored on a wild pitch to give the Spartans a 7-3 edge.
Beard provided NSU with some breathing room with a two-out, two-run triple in the sixth.
Anderson (4-2) made the lead stand. He allowed just two hits after the fifth inning, with both of those coming with two outs in the ninth. But Anderson fanned pinch hitter Noah LoCasio to end it.
Anderson's previous career high was eight strikeouts, that coming in a relief outing on April 1 at Coppin State. This is the fifth time this year a Spartan has reached 10 strikeouts, with
Devin Hemmerich notching the other four.
NSU easily topped the previous school record of nine stolen bases, which had been done three previous times. The last occurrence was on March 12 in a win at Towson.
Moore scored three times, and both Beard and Burrell had two RBI apiece for NSU, which is over .500 on the season for the first time since Feb. 25.
The Spartans remain home this weekend, hosting a three-game MEAC series on Friday and Saturday against Maryland Eastern Shore. The first game will be played at 3 p.m. Friday, and the teams play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
