GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman designated hitter
Stephen Baughan had a career-high four of Norfolk State's season-best 20 hits as the Spartans won their seventh straight game, 12-7, over North Carolina A&T on Wednesday night at War Memorial Stadium.
In a non-conference, cross-division game featuring the MEAC's two division leaders, the Spartans (19-14) earned a season split with the Aggies (20-16) thanks to multi-hit games from seven different players. Baughan also matched a career-high three RBI in his 4-for-5 night.
Ismael Herrera and
Justin Burrell had three hits apiece, while
Andre' Moore,
Brian Beard,
Alex Mauricio and
Roger Hall recorded two each.
Sophomore right hander
Chase Anderson (5-2) earned a mid-week pitching win for the second week in a row, allowing just four unearned runs with six strikeouts over eight innings pitched.
The Spartans jumped on top early, scoring 10 times in the first four innings. Mauricio hit an RBI double - his first of two doubles on the night - while Baughan and Burrell both hit run-scoring singles in a four-run first. Beard had the fourth RBI of the frame on a groundout.
Moore singled and scored on an RBI base hit by Beard in the second. Herrera and
Johnny Mayer added run-scoring singles in the third, while Baughan, Hall and Herrera registered RBI singles in the fourth to put NSU ahead 10-2.
The Aggies got within 10-4 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Spartans went back up by eight in the sixth. Hall and Baughan both knocked in runs with singles to stretch NSU's lead to 12-4.
Anderson overcame some early resistance from the Aggies by pitching four scoreless innings to finish his night. N.C. A&T plated three runs in the ninth, all after a two-out NSU error prolonged the inning.
Beard, Hall and Herrera knocked in two runs apiece. Burrell scored three times, while Moore, Mauricio and Hall each scored twice.
Wednesday was NSU's third time reaching double figures in hits in its last four contests. The Spartans' previous season high was 17 hits, accomplished twice in consecutive games against Villanova on Feb. 18-19.
Brandon Melendez had three of the 10 Aggie hits. Will Greene (0-1) took the loss for N.C. A&T on the mound after allowing six hits and five runs in two innings of work.
The Spartans return home for another three-game MEAC series against Coppin State this weekend. The teams play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a single game at noon Sunday at
Marty L. Miller Field.
