CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Freshman
Martha Bissah and sophomore
Janay Fields both turned in season-best performances to highlight the final regular-season meet for the NSU women's track and field team on Saturday at the University of Virginia Grand Prix.
Bissah lowered her MEAC-leading 800-meter time with a runner-up finish of 2 minutes, 6.05 seconds at U.Va. The time ranks Bissah 17th in the NCAA East Region this year and is more than two seconds faster than her previous best effort.
Fields registered PRs in both the 100 and 200-meter dash events. Fields won the 200 in 24.45 seconds and placed third in the 100m in 11.85. Teammate and fellow sophomore
Tyrika Lee also ran well in the sprints, finishing just ahead of Fields in the 100m in 11.84 and earning fourth in the 200m (24.65).
Sophomore
Taejah Robertson also posted a PR over the weekend. She finished in fifth place in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.80 seconds, the third-fastest clocking in the MEAC this season. Freshman
T'Nai Wells placed 10th in the 100m hurdles in 14.45.
The Spartans' distance runners were led by junior
Candice Higgins, who placed fourth in the 5,000 meters in 19 minutes, 10.21 seconds.
In the field events,
Brianna Hayes placed seventh in the high jump with a top clearance of 5 feet, 4.5 inches. That represents a season-best for the junior. Freshman
Daiysa Burrell also posted a pair of eighth-place finishes with season-best throws in the discus (89-9) and javelin (127-1).
The Spartans compete in the 2017 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships this Thursday through Saturday on the campus of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.
