CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Freshman
Jacob Milton became the first Spartan in five years to clear 7 feet in the high jump, as he won the event at the University of Virginia Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon.
Milton cleared 7 feet, 0.25 inch to notch his third high jump victory of the outdoor season. The 7-0.25 bettered his previous outdoor personal of 6-10.25, which he set in a win at the Colonial Relays on March 30. He is now first in the MEAC in the event and tied for 14
th in the NCAA East Region.
The last Spartan to clear 7 feet in the high jump was John James at the 2012 MEAC Outdoor Championship.
Fellow freshman
Garth Warner also fared well in the event, taking third place with a top height of 6-7.5. Warner and Milton have alternated holding down the top spot in the conference this outdoor season.
Junior thrower
Da'Trail Hockaday also set a PR over the weekend. Hockaday placed fifth with a personal-best throw of 157 feet, 5 inches in the hammer. And in his first time throwing the javelin, freshman
Festus Bett placed 10th in the event at U.Va. with a top throw of 154-8.
On the track, the Spartans amassed three top-five finishes in the sprints. Freshman
Jaylen Banks ran a season-best 400 time of 47.91 seconds to take third place. Senior
Jaylen Carr placed fourth in the 100m (10.86) and classmate
Rashad Ramsey also took fourth in the 200m (21.68).
The Spartans' top finish in the distance events came via junior
Ronald Korir. He ran his fastest 5,000m time of the outdoor season, and the second-best in the MEAC, with a clocking of 14 minutes, 52.06 seconds. He placed fourth in the event at U.Va.
The U.Va. Grand Prix was the final regular season meet for the Spartans, who compete in the MEAC Outdoor Championships this Thursday through Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.
