Longwood Starts Fast, Pulls Away for 13-6 Win over NSU

NORFOLK, Va. – Longwood scored six times in the first four innings and pulled away from host Norfolk State, outslugging the Spartans 13-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

Nate Blakeney and Brandon Harvell hit solo home runs for the Lancers (17-30), who outhit NSU (24-20) 14-10.

Brian Beard went 3-for-4, Alex Mauricio (2-for-4) doubled twice and Justin Burrell knocked in three runs for the Spartans.

Justin Mitchell's sacrifice fly and Alex Lewis' RBI single put Longwood in front 2-0 in the top of the first. Mauricio doubled in Andre' Moore to cut the Spartans' deficit in half in the bottom of the inning, but Longwood scored twice more in the third and twice in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. Blakeney homered in the second and Harvell in the third for the Lancers.

The Spartans got two back in the fifth thanks to RBI singles by Beard and Burrell, but NSU left the bases loaded, trailing 6-3. The Lancers then scored seven more times in their final four innings to pull away.

The Spartans scored three more times in the seventh on a two-run single by Burrell and an RBI single by Robbie Depp, but that would be it for the Spartans.

Burrell finished 2-for-5 for NSU. Andre' Moore scored a pair of runs.

Antwaun Tucker batted 3-for-4 and scored four runs for the Lancers. Harvell, Mitchell and Carlos Garrido drove in two runs apiece.

Jonathan Mauricio (3-5) took the loss for NSU after allowing six runs, five earned, in five innings of work. Jon Peterson, the first of six Longwood pitchers, earned the win with three innings of work and four strikeouts.

The Spartans close their regular season with a 2 p.m. game Friday against North Carolina Central at Marty L. Miller Field. The game was originally slated for Sunday but moved up two days due to a scheduling conflict for NCCU.
