Day 2 Gallery
SALISBURY, Md. – Danny Rodriguez and Austin Garcia each homered twice and Jameel Edney added one of his own as Bethune-Cookman ousted Norfolk State 16-6 on Friday at Perdue Stadium to advance to Saturday's MEAC Baseball championship final.
The Spartans (25-21) drop to the loser's bracket and play the late game of the day against the winner of game two between North Carolina A&T and Delaware State. The Wildcats (32-23) advance to Saturday's championship round.
The Wildcats got two runs in the first as Edney hit an RBI triple and Garcia an RBI single. But the big blow was an eight-run second, which included a costly NSU error that allowed three runs to score on a fly ball by Rodriguez. Garcia hit a two-run homer to highlight the frame.
Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the third. He and Garcia then went back-to-back for their second homers of the day in the fifth, and Edney tacked on a two-run shot in the seventh.
The Spartans plated three runs in the fourth on a two-run single by
Andre' Moore and a bases-loaded walk to
Stephen Baughan.
Chris Ford singled home NSU's fourth run in the sixth inning. Ford's bases-loaded walk and
Terrence Pinkston's RBI groundout in the seventh accounted for the Spartans' final runs, but it wasn't enough to avoid the 10-run rule as the game was stopped after seven innings.
Moore went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Ford also knocked in two runs for the Spartans.
Tony Leite and
Justin Burrell scored two runs apiece. For B-CU, Garcia finished 3-for-5 with four RBI. Rodriguez and Edney each had two hits and three RBI. Edney scored four times.
Alex Mauricio (4-4) was charged with the loss after allowing seven hits and 10 runs, but just two earned, in 1.2 innings pitched. Tyler Norris (8-1) earned the win for the Wildcats. He worked six innings and yielded five hits and four runs.
