LANDOVER, Md. – Norfolk State's
Martha Bissah added two more gold medals to her impressive haul in her young career, as the sophomore won the 800 meters and ran a leg on the winning distance medley relay team on Friday at the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
Bissah, who won four gold medals en route to Most Outstanding Female Runner honors at this meet as a freshman last year, clocked a time of 2 minutes, 9.23 seconds in repeating as indoor 800m champ.
Led by Bissah, the Spartans are fifth in the team standings with 30 points with one day left in the meet. Bethune-Cookman leads with 64 points.
Bissah teamed with
Candice Higgins,
Malika Pride and
Chazmin Fullwood to win the DMR in 11:59.52 to close Friday's action on the women's side. On Saturday, Bissah goes for gold in the mile and 3,000 meters.
Elsewhere on Friday,
Kellyann James claimed fifth in the pentathlon and
Ayana Dozier finished eighth.
In Friday's preliminary races, Pride, a freshman, ran well in the 400 meters. She finished second in her heat in 56.72 seconds, qualifying her for Saturday's event final. In addition, junior
Taejah Robertson did likewise in the 60-meter hurdles. Robertson was second in her heat in 8.56 seconds.
Saturday's final day of competition begins at 9:30 a.m. ESPN3 will broadcast the meet beginning at 1 p.m.
