NORFOLK, Va. – Hofstra used a pair of sixth-inning home runs to rally for an 8-6 win over Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at
Marty L. Miller Field.
The win completed a three-game weekend sweep for the Pride (5-2), while NSU (0-9) is still in search of its first win of the year. The Spartans rebounded from a 4-0 deficit by scoring six runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead, but were unable to hold on.
Rob Weissheier's two-run single in the first gave Hofstra an early 2-0 lead, and the Pride doubled that by scoring twice in the fourth on a double steal and a Spartan error.
But the Spartans scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to start their comeback.
Justin Burrell doubled and
Syeed Mahdi reached on a two-out Pride error.
Ismael Herrera singled in Burrell, and Mahdi came around to score from first on another Hofstra miscue to bring NSU within 4-2.
The Spartans weren't done, scoring four runs – their most in an inning this season – off five hits in the bottom of the fifth.
Justin Hayes led off the frame with a bunt single and
Tony Leite followed with a single to center.
Alsander Womack followed with a three-run blast to left field, his first career homer, into a stiff breeze blowing in to give the Spartans a 5-4 advantage.
Stephen Baughan and
Aaron Robinson kept the inning going with back-to-back singles, and
Justin Burrell capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to plate Baughan.
But the lead would not last. In the top of the sixth, Vinnie Costello hit a solo homer to left with one out to halve the Pride's deficit. After a single by Austin Gauthier, Vito Friscia hit a two-out, two-run home run down the line in left to put Hofstra back in front 7-6.
Weissheier tacked on a sacrifice fly in the seventh to pad Hofstra's lead.
The Spartans threatened in the ninth. Womack led off with a double down the right-field line and Baughan drew a walk to put the tying runs on base. But Pride reliever Chris Weiss retired the next three batters he faced, two by strikeout, to seal the victory.
Womack capped his solid weekend with a 2-for-5 day, driving in three runs. He had three extra-base hits on the weekend. Baughan was 2-for-2 with a run scored and two walks and Leite batted 2-for-5 Sunday as the Spartans posted season highs in hits (10) and runs (six).
Friscia and Weissheier had three hits apiece, while Costello and Mikey Riesner both had two hits for Hofstra.
Zach Altieri earned the win in relief for Hofstra with one inning of work out of the bullpen. Weiss picked up the three-inning save, allowing two hits and fanning eight batters.
Trey Hanchey (0-3) took the loss for NSU, allowing nine hits and seven runs (five earned) with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched.
Joey Santos pitched the final 3.1 innings, striking out a season-high five and yielding one unearned run.
The Spartans play two mid-week games this week, with a 3 p.m. game Tuesday at Old Dominion and a road matchup at VCU at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
