BLACKSBURG, Va. – Jacob Milton,
Justin Pinder and
Kamil Jihad all won individual events over the weekend to pace the NSU men's track team in its first meet of indoor season at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
Milton, the two-time defending MEAC indoor high jump champion, picked up where he left off last season. Milton cleared 7 feet and 0.25 inch to easily win the high jump competition at Rector Field House. The Spartans also took third and fourth in the event, with
Garth Warner and
Kequan Henley taking third and fourth, respectively, after both cleared 6-5. The 6-5 matched Henley's best-ever indoor high jump.
Henley also took fourth place in the long jump. In his first-ever collegiate meet competing in the long jump, Henley recorded a best jump of 22 feet, 0.25 inch, a personal record.
Henley was one of three Spartans to earn a pair of top-five individual finishes. Pinder, the team's lone senior, won the 400 meters in an indoor PR of 49.20 seconds and was also third in the 500 in 1:05.46. Sophomore
Trequan Barnes placed fourth in the 200 (21.83) and fifth in the 300 (33.58).
NSU's third race win at Virginia Tech came via Jihad. A freshman who earned All-MEAC cross country honors in the fall, Jihad won the 800 meters in 1 minutes, 54.01 seconds.
Jihad, Barnes, Pinder and
Jaylen Banks also teamed up to place third in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:14.96.
Two other Spartan newcomers,
Meshack Kipchirchir and
Lelei Too, finished second and third in the 3,000 meters. Kipchirchir ran a time of 8:45.76 and Too was close behind in 8:46.77.
Sophomore
Patrick Booker cleared 13-1.5 to take third in the pole vault. That marks his best-ever height at an indoor collegiate meet.
The Spartans are back on the track next weekend at the VMI Keydet Invitational.
