UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Sophomore
Trequan Barnes set a new school indoor record in the 400-meter dash on Saturday at the Penn State National Open.
Barnes clocked a time of 46.17 seconds, a new personal-best and the No. 4 Division I time in the nation through Saturday. His MEAC-leading time earned him a second-place finish Saturday behind Myles Pringle of Division II Ashland (46.12).
Barnes broke the indoor school standard established by
Sean Holston, who posted a 46.54 in 2012.
Freshman
Evans Cheruiyot also ran a MEAC-leading time over the weekend. Cheruiyot notched a sixth-place finish in the invitational section of the 5,000 meters, finishing in 14 minutes, 52.65 seconds. He overtook teammate
Meshack Kipchirchir for the top 5K time in the conference.
Also Saturday, freshman
Kamil Jihad posted a season-best 800-meter time of 1:53.84.
The Spartans also sent three athletes Saturday to the Captains Invitational at Christopher Newport in Newport News.
Zaire Barnes placed third in the shot put (44 feet, 3 inches), while
Jaylen Banks and
Byron Carson finished third and fourth, respectively, in the heptathlon.
The Spartans compete at the Liberty Elite Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
