NORFOLK, Va. – Quarterback
Juwan Carter and offensive lineman
Justin Redd were awarded MEAC weekly honors Monday following one of the best offensive performances in recent years for the Norfolk State football team.
Carter, a junior, was named MEAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, while Redd, a redshirt sophomore offensive guard, was selected MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Week for their efforts in the Spartans' 49-21 win at Howard.
Carter accounted for a MEAC season-high and his own personal-best with six total touchdowns against the Bison. Carter matched his career high with four touchdown passes and also ran for two scores while amassing 433 yards of total offense, the most by a MEAC player this season. Carter was 15-of-23 for 377 yards with no interceptions through the air, and also ran eight times for 56 yards.
This is Carter's second MEAC weekly honor of the season. He shared the honor with FAMU quarterback Ryan Stanley.
Redd, NSU's starting right guard, graded out at 89 percent on his assignments Saturday. He and his fellow linemen helped NSU roll up 649 yards of total offense, the second-most in a single game in school history and most since 2005. The Spartans also ran for 272 yards as a team, their most since 2010. Redd also was credited with four knockdown blocks in the victory.
The Spartans (2-5, 1-2 MEAC) are on the road again this week when they travel to Daytona Beach, Florida, to face Bethune-Cookman at 4 p.m. Saturday.
