Series History
Friday will serve as a rematch after Howard defeated NSU at Joseph Echols Hall on March 7, 98-95. The Spartans won the first meeting this year at HU, 80-78, erasing a 24-point deficit. Howard ended a six-game losing streak to NSU with the victory last week. The Spartans still own the edge in the series, 45-11.
The two teams have met three times in the MEAC tournament, in 2011, '12 and '17. The Spartans defeated the Bison in the quarterfinals in 2012 and the semifinals in 2017, advancing to the championship game both years.
Scouting Howard
The Bison finished 10-6 in the MEAC this year and in a tie for third with North Carolina Central. They come in riding a five-game win streak, including the last four of the regular season all on the road. Howard owns the MEAC's top scoring offense at 79.5 points per game.
MEAC Player of the Year R.J. Cole had 23 points in the win over Bethune-Cookman on Thursday. He has led the team in scoring each of the last 10 games. That includes a 36-point game against NSU last week and 29 points in the first meeting this year with the Spartans. He averages 21.7 points and 6.3 assists, shoots 39 percent from deep and 82 percent from the free throw line, and has gotten to the charity stripe 243 times this year.
Charles Williams is no slouch either, as the first-team All-MEAC player averages 18.4 points while hitting 37 percent from deep, 45 percent overall and 86 percent from the foul line. Chad Lott, a third-team all-conference selection, tallies 14.1 points and 5.2 rebounds as well. The Bison shoot 36 percent from 3-point range and 72 percent from the free throw line and are +2.7 in turnover margin.
