NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with North Carolina A&T on Friday at the NSU Softball Field, using an 11-run second inning to roll to a 15-4, five-inning win in game one and a three-hit shutout from
Skylar Swain to win 1-0 in the nightcap.
The wins moved the Spartans over .500 on the year at 11-10 and ran their win streak to five games.
In the opener, NSU broke open a 1-1 game with an 11-run second inning. The Spartans had eight hits in the frame, including a three-run homer by
Kylee Lopez that gave the senior catcher the all-time school career record, with 23.
That was far from the only damage in the inning.
Shelby DesChamps smacked a three-run double to left to start the scoring spree. After
Alison Guckin reached on an error, Lopez's blast made it 7-1. Not to be outdone, third baseman
Tuli Iosefa followed with a solo shot to left to give the team back-to-back homers.
Later in the frame,
Denisha Megginson stroked a two-run single,
Mia Holmes added an RBI single and Guckin knocked in another run with a groundout to stretch NSU's lead to 12-1.
Iosefa added another solo homer in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth as the Spartans won by the eight-run rule.
Iosefa finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBIs. DesChamps,
Gabby Vaughan and winning pitcher
Hunter Halford both added two hits. NSU tallied 13 hits in its four innings at bat. Eight of the nine Spartan starters had at least one hit and all nine scored at least one run.
Halford pitched four innings to improve to 5-6 on the year.
In game two, Swain (4-3) pitched her second straight shutout, limiting the Aggies (3-15) to just three hits. That comes on the heels of her four-hitter in the win over Albany last Sunday. Against the Aggies, Swain did not walk a batter and matched her season high with five strikeouts.
The Spartans scored the only run Swain would need in the bottom of the fifth. DesChamps doubled to start the inning and stole third. She later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Lopez.
Swain made the lead stand. She did not allow a hit after the third inning.
DesChamps had both NSU hits in game two. She finished the doubleheader by going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Lopez and Iosefa both had four RBIs on the day.
The Spartans play a doubleheader on Wednesday at Radford.
