Spartans See Win Streak End, Drop 2 to Maryland Eastern Shore

SALISBURY, Md. – Maryland Eastern Shore took a pair of victories from Norfolk State on Saturday, rallying to win the completion of Friday's suspended game 3-2 before outscoring the Spartans 18-14 in a wild contest in the regularly scheduled game on Saturday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The losses broke NSU's seven-game winning streak and dropped the Spartans to 7-12 overall, 3-2 in the MEAC North. The Hawks improve to 5-19, 2-3.

Friday's series opener was suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning with NSU leading 2-0 on the strength of an RBI groundout by Brandon Crosby and a run-scoring wild pitch. But the Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh after the game resumed Saturday. Blake Coleman hit a two-out, two-run single to tie the game. He stole second base and then scored on a single by Avery Tunnell.

MDES reliever Caleb Walston made those runs stand up. He pitched all four innings after the game resumed Saturday, allowing just two hits and striking out four to get the win. Kevin Alicea (1-2) took the loss for the Spartans, allowing three runs in three innings of work.

The regularly scheduled game featured 29 hits, 18 walks, five hit batters and six errors, five by NSU. The Hawks scored at least one run in every inning and at least two in five frames.

The Hawks took advantage of some sloppy NSU play early, capitalizing on four Spartan errors and three hit batters to surge in front to a 12-3 lead after four innings. But the Spartans kept coming, scoring a total of 10 runs in the fifth through seventh innings to make it a game.

NSU plated five runs in the fifth, three coming on Crosby's first homer of the season and two more on RBI singles by Stephen Baughan and Adam Collins. Trailing 13-8 after five, the Spartans scored four more times in the sixth. Baughan hit an RBI triple and scored on a Hawk error. Seth Hockett's RBI single and Justin Hayes' sacrifice fly cut the MDES lead to 13-12.

But the Hawks kept adding insurance, plating two runs in both the seventh and eighth, the last two coming home on NSU's fifth error.

Baughan hit a solo homer in the seventh, and Collins' run-scoring double in the ninth brought NSU within 18-14. Spartan catcher Kam Holland walked with two outs to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate, but Cory Poulsen struck out Korey Singh to end the game.

Baughan went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs in Saturday's scheduled game. He matched his career high in hits and fell a double shy of the cycle. The homer was his third of the year.

Caleb Ward went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a season-high four runs scored. Collins was 2-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Devynn Hancock and Dillon Oxyer had three hits apiece for the Hawks. Oxyer scored four times.

Ridge Walker (2-4) was the losing pitcher for NSU. He gave up three hits and six runs, two earned, in 1.1 innings pitched. Johnny Franco was charged with the win for MDES after one inning of relief work, and Paulsen got the save.

The teams complete their series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
