HANOVER, Md. – Devin Rivera Ozuna pitched a complete game five-hitter and Coppin State scored all its runs in the first three innings to take the rubber game of its series with Norfolk State, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.
With the win, the Eagles (14-10, 7-2 MEAC) are in sole possession of first place in the conference's Northern Division, with NSU (9-15, 5-4) in second.
CSU scored all of its runs early. Matthew Day reached on a Spartan error and scored on Justin Banks' RBI single in the first. Eric Crossman's RBI double in the second doubled the CSU lead.
The big blow was a three-run third inning for the Eagles. Derek Lohr walked to lead off the inning, and he eventually scored on an NSU error. Conner Walker's squeeze bunt and Day's RBI infield single capped the three-run inning. The Eagles hit just one ball out of the infield in the frame, but made the most of a couple infield hits, two walks, an error, a wild pitch and a passed ball.
The Spartans cut into the lead with three runs in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth,
Dionte Brown walked to start the inning before infield hits by
Justin Hayes and
Caleb Ward loaded the bases.
Stephen Baughan's sacrifice fly put the Spartans on the board, and
Kam Holland's RBI grounder scored Hayes to bring NSU within 5-2.
In the seventh, Brown singled and scored on an Eagle error to cut CSU's lead to 5-3. But Hayes was caught stealing at third base to end the inning, and Rivera Ozuna retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the win for CSU.
Ward was 2-for-4 for NSU, which managed just five hits. Banks went 2-for-3 and Thomas 2-for-5 for the Eagles.
Rivera Ozuna allowed just two earned runs, walked four and struck out six to improve to 4-1.
Jonathan Mahoney (2-3) took the loss for NSU. He allowed just one earned run but five total in 5.1 innings of work. He walked six and fanned five.
The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday in a 3 p.m. game at Richmond.
