Ward's Walk-Off Single Sends Spartans to 3-2 Win over DSU

NORFOLK, Va. – Caleb Ward delivered the walk-off RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to help Norfolk State rally for a 3-2 Senior Day win on Sunday against Delaware State at Marty L. Miller Field.

DSU (14-23, 9-12 MEAC North) broke a 1-1 deadlock in the top of the 10th on a two-out John Weglarz RBI single. But the Spartans (19-21, 14-7) had the answer. Ty Hanchey led off the bottom of the 10th with a single to right. Mikey Delgado followed with a sacrifice bunt to that DSU relief pitcher Austin Warrington threw away, allowing Hanchey to reach third and Delgado to take second.

Then the chess match began. The Hornets brought in reliever Robert Shorts and NSU answered by bringing in pinch hitter Korey Singh. Short intentionally walked Singh to load the bases. Spartan outfielder Justin Hayes grounded into a force out at home for the first out of the inning, but the bases remained loaded. Alsander Womack then lined a base hit through the infield to score Delgado with the tying run. Ward followed suit, lining the first pitch he saw from Shorts into left-center to score pinch runner Miguel Cameron and set off a raucous celebration near first base.

Until extras, NSU starter Jonathan Mahoney and DSU starter Darnell Maisonet engaged in a tight pitchers' duel. Mahoney allowed a run on Weglarz's RBI triple in the top of the first, then shut the Hornets down for the next eight frames. NSU also scratched across just a lone run against Maisonet, that coming in the third when Delgado doubled and scored on Womack's two-out triple to right-center.

Neither pitcher factored into the decision. Mahoney pitched to a single batter in the 10th, and Mark Herron ended the right hander's day with a single to start the frame before Mahoney gave way to Seth Hockett. Hockett retired the next two hitters before Weglarz lined a single up the middle for the go-ahead run.

Mahoney, one of four Spartans recognized on Senior Day prior to the game, pitched nine-plus innings, striking out six and walking none. He yielded two runs on nine hits. Maisonet struck out 11 and allowed just six hits and one run in nine innings of work.

Hockett (1-1) got the win, pitching one inning out of the bullpen and striking out one batter. Warrington (1-5) took the loss, as both hitters he faced scored.

Womack went 2-for-5 with two RBIs for NSU. Delgado finished 2-for-3 and scored twice.

Weglarz had three hits for the Hornets.

NSU is off during the week for exams before facing Maryland Eastern Shore for a three-game series next Friday through Sunday in Salisbury.
