Spartans Fight Back to Top Eastern Shore in 10 Innings, 6-5

SALISBURY, Md. – Down to its final out, Norfolk State rallied to force extra innings before beating Maryland Eastern Shore 6-5 on a 10th-inning wild pitch on Friday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Spartan outfielder Brandon Crosby's two-out RBI single in the ninth tied the game at 5-all. First baseman Stephen Baughan then doubled and scored on a two-out wild pitch in the 10th to lift the Spartans (20-21, 15-7 MEAC North) to the win in the series opener, their second straight extra-innings win.

The Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. Korey Singh hit a two-out RBI double in the top of the first. Adam Collins and Trent Hanchey then hit consecutive one-out doubles in the second, with Hanchey's hit scoring Collins. Hanchey later scored on Justin Hayes' squeeze bunt.

The Hawks (10-40, 4-18) got within 3-1 in the third on Blake Coleman's solo homer. Crosby's run-scoring groundout stretched the lead back to three, 4-1, in the fourth. But the Hawks rallied for two runs off three hits in the bottom of the fifth to climb within one. Brian Cordell doubled in Nick Roets and scored on Dillon Oxyer's two-out single.

The Hawks finally knotted the score in the sixth on Cordell's sacrifice fly, and took the lead on Devynn Hancock's solo homer to lead off the eighth.

But NSU rallied with its back against the proverbial wall. Mikey Delgado worked a two-out walk from Hawk starter Dwayne Marshall in the top of the ninth. Pinch runner Jaran Davis stole second, and Crosby delivered an RBI single to tie the score.

In the 10th, Baughan hit his league-leading 18th double with one out off of Hawk reliever Chris Sanders (3-3). Baughan moved to third on Singh's flyout and scored on a Sanders wild pitch.

NSU reliever Trey Hanchey (3-0) earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Tyler Morgan struck out Cordell with a runner on second to end the game and pick up the save, the first of the junior lefty's career.

Chase Anderson took a no-decision for the Spartans despite striking out 10 over seven innings. Anderson's third double-digit strikeout game of the year also moved the senior righty passed Joey Seal into second place on the school's all-time strikeout list. Anderson, who yielded eight hits and four runs Friday, now has 275 career punchouts.

Trent Hanchey was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run for the Spartans. Crosby drove in two runs.

The teams play the second game of their weekend series at 9 a.m. Saturday.
