STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Junior
Trequan Barnes set a new school record in the 500 meters at the Great Dane Classic to highlight the weekend for the NSU men in the Empire State.
Barnes was second overall and the top collegiate finisher in the 500 meters Saturday. He clocked a time of 1:03.22, .03 ahead of Olympian Chris Brown's previous school record.
Barnes' finish was one of seven top-10 showings for the NSU men on the track. Sophomore
Kai Cole and junior
Keith Brown each had two of those thanks to their efforts in the 60 and 200 meters. Cole was runner-up in the 60 in 6.83 seconds, and he also was seventh in the 200 in 22.03. Brown finished sixth in the 60 (6.9) and 10th in the 200 (22.18).
Elsewhere, freshman
Savien Hayes (400 meters) and sophomore
Kamil Jihad (800) also took fifth in their respective events. Jihad's time of 1:55.71 is the best in the MEAC so far this season.
In the high jump, seniors
Jacob Milton (6-10.75) and
Garth Warner (6-8.75) both registered their best performances of the season to take second and third places, respectively. Senior
Kequan Henley (6-4.75) took sixth in the same event.
Freshman
Azad Williams also had a top-10 finish in the field. He was seventh in the shot put with a top throw of 46-10.
NSU returns to action this Friday and Saturday at the Gamecock Opener hosted by the University of South Carolina.
