Spartans of Norfolk State Carry 3-1 Record into Sunday's Meeting

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State will head down to the state of North Carolina to take on another set of Spartans in a game recently added to the schedule. On Sunday, the Spartans of NSU men's basketball will face the Spartans of UNC Greensboro at 2 p.m. at Greensboro Coliseum.

The contest was added earlier this week after NSU's games against William & Mary and Regent were postponed. Norfolk State comes into the weekend sporting a 3-1 record.

Media Coverage
The game against UNCG will be broadcast live on ESPN+, available through the WatchESPN app. Live stats will also be provided by UNCG.

Series History
This will mark the fifth all-time meeting between NSU and UNCG. The first four all came during four straight seasons from 1999-2003, when the teams played a pair of home-and-home series. UNCG won three of those four matchups, although NSU took the last game at home by a 75-70 score on Dec. 21, 2003.

Scouting the Opponent
UNCG is coming off four straight 20-win seasons, including a 23-9 campaign a year ago. The Spartans slipped to 1-3 this year after falling at Coppin State on Thursday, 85-80. Leading scorer Isaiah Miller scored 24 points, nine rebounds and five assists, bumping his averages to 22.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game. He is the only player in double figures for a team that scores 73 per game. The Spartans shoot just 24 percent from deep and commit 18 turnovers per game. But they also force 17 turnovers each time out and average nearly nine more rebounds per game than the opposition.

Last Time Out
A career-high 29 points from Devante Carter, who nearly completed a triple-double with nine rebounds and eight assists, helped NSU overcome Hampton last Monday at home, 76-64. The Spartans outscored the Pirates by 11 in the second half of the Battle of the Bay while shooting 56 percent for the game. Norfolk State outscored Hampton 13-3 to close out the game, held the Pirates to 34 percent shooting overall, and held a 42-31 edge on the glass. In addition to Carter, Daryl Anderson also scored in double figures with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Quick Hits
 • Norfolk State currently sits 10th in the nation in 3-point shooting at 45.1 percent. A big reason for that is sophomore Daryl Anderson, who is also 10th in individual 3-point shooting at 68.4 percent (13-of-19). Senior Kashaun Hicks is 6-of-13 as well.
 • The win over Hampton this year marked the fifth time in the past six games NSU has taken the Battle of the Bay at home.
 • The game against ODU marked the first time the Spartans hosted the Monarchs since March 8, 1969, and just the second time ever. The other 18 games have been played either at ODU or at Norfolk Scope Arena.
 • Only twice in their Division I history have the Spartans started the year 2-0 with wins over D-I opponents: this year with wins over James Madison and Radford, and in 1998-99 with victories over McNeese State and Georgia State.
 • 1998-99 was also the last year the Spartans last played Radford, part of a home-and-home series against the Highlanders in NSU's first two years in Division I. NSU defeated James Madison for the second straight game after also defeating the Dukes in overtime in 2014-15.
 • This year was the first time NSU defeated three in-state D-I opponents (JMU, Radford, Hampton) in the same season since the Spartans moved to D-I in 1997-98.
