RICHMOND, Va. – Steven Carpenter drove in three runs and Tyler Locklear knocked in two as VCU topped Norfolk State 10-1 in the Spartans' first midweek game of the season on Tuesday afternoon at the Diamond.
VCU (3-1) scored five runs combined in the second and third innings, and five more in the sixth and seventh to pull away from the Spartans (2-2).
Catcher
Ty Hanchey tied his career high with three hits (3-for-3) and second baseman
Alsander Womack (2-for-4) doubled twice and knocked in one run to lead NSU.
Brett Young hit an RBI single and scored on a wild pitch in the Rams' three-run second inning.
Hanchey singled to lead off the third inning and scored on Womack's first double of the day to bring NSU within 3-1. But that would be the closest the Spartans would get the rest of the way. Carpenter doubled in two runs in the bottom of the third and Brandon Henson hit an RBI single in VCU's three-run sixth.
Locklear added a two-run single in the seventh for VCU.
Danny Hosley,
Korey Singh and
Mikey Delgado all added singles for NSU, which finished with eight hits. VCU had nine hits, but also benefited from seven walks and six hit batsmen.
Jaden Griffin (1-0), the second of five VCU pitchers, earned the win with three scoreless innings pitched.
James Deloatch (0-1) took the loss for NSU, allowing five runs in 2.2 innings pitched.
The Spartans are back home for their next weekend series, as Morehead State comes to
Marty L. Miller Field this Friday through Sunday.
