NORFOLK, Va. – Cory Conway pitched a nine-hit shutout and Morehead State broke open a close game in the middle innings en route to an 11-0 win and three-game sweep of Norfolk State on Sunday at
Marty L. Miller Field.
Conway evaded early trouble and scattered nine hits to help the Eagles (3-4) complete the sweep of NSU (2-5). NSU had six hits in the first four frames, but couldn't break through. The Spartans stranded seven base runners and also hit into three double plays.
After three scoreless innings for both starting pitchers, Morehead (3-4) struck for the game's first run in the fourth. Ryan Layne doubled with one out for the first Eagle hit of the game off Spartan starter
Kevin Alicea. Layne stole third and scored on a groundout by Logan Goodnight.
The Eagles tacked on two more in the fifth and five in the sixth. A squeeze bunt by Jack Gardner and an RBI single by Brody Shoupe stretched the MSU lead to 3-0 in the fifth. In the sixth, an NSU error kick-started a five-run frame that included Stephen Hill's RBI groundout, Dom Peroni's RBI double and Shoupe's two-run double that made it 8-0.
The Eagles added two more runs in the seventh and one in the eighth.
Alicea (0-1) took the loss in his first start of the year despite pitching five effective innings. He allowed just four hits, yielding three runs and striking out three.
Mason Velasquez was the only Spartan with more than one hit. He went 2-for-3.
Conway (1-1) struck out five and walked two in the complete-game effort for the visitors. Layne, Shoupe and Peyton Dillingham had two hits each for the Eagles. Shoupe drove in three runs.
The Spartans are on the road this Wednesday in a 3 p.m. game at VMI.
