Williams Wins Shot Put Title to Help NSU Men Finish as MEAC Indoor Runners-Up

LANDOVER, Md. – Freshman Azad Williams picked a fine time for his best throw of the season in the shot put, posting a throw of 51 feet, 0.75 inches Saturday morning to win the MEAC indoor title at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

The Spartans scored in every track event contested on Saturday, finishing second overall in the team standings with 133 points. North Carolina A&T won the conference title with 165.

Leading the way on the track Saturday for NSU were a pair of second-place finishes, turned in by Kamil Jihad in the 800 and Anteneh Girma in the 3,000 meters. Jihad clocked a time of 1 minutes, 54.24 seconds and Girma finished his race in 8:41.35 – just .08 behind the winner Carlin Berryhill of Bethune-Cookman.

Girma was one of four Spartans who scored in the 3,000. Lelei Too was third, Evans Cheruiyot placed fifth and Meshack Kipchirchir was sixth. NSU also had four of the top eight in the mile, with Cheruiyot placing fourth, Too sixth, Kipchirchir seventh and Je'Shawn Walker eighth.

The Spartan sprinters were paced by sophomore Kai Cole. Cole PRed in the 60 meters, placing fourth in 6.73 seconds. Later in the day, he won a bronze medal in the 200 meters with a time of 21.43 seconds. Freshman Savien Hayes gave NSU two of the top eight in the 200, as he took seventh in 21.88 seconds.

Also Saturday, Byron Carson recorded a fifth-place finish in the 60 hurdles in 8.27 seconds and Trequan Barnes was seventh in the 400 in 48.17.

Another bright spot for NSU was freshman Azziah Russell in the pole vault. Russell finished third to earn a spot on the medal podium, clearing an indoor personal-best height of 13 feet, 0.25 inches.

The Spartans will have approximately a month off before opening outdoor season at the University of Richmond.
