Albany Rallies Late, Tops NSU 7-6 in 10 Innings

NORFOLK, Va. – Albany rallied from a three-run deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning, then won it in the 10th on an two-out infield RBI single to finish a three-game sweep of Norfolk State, 7-6, on Sunday at Marty L. Miller Field.

John Daly's single off the shortstop's glove allowed Nick Kondo to score the go-ahead run from second base in the 10th for the Great Danes (5-4), who trailed 6-3 in the eighth.

Albany scored the game's first run in the top of the third. Daly led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Jason Bottari.

Daly's sacrifice fly in the fifth gave Albany a 2-0 lead, but the Spartan bats awakened in the bottom of the fifth. After being shutout in their last three games, NSU (2-8) roared to life in the bottom of the fifth with five hits. Jaran Davis and Adam Collins led off the inning with two straight singles. Alsander Womack then brought home the Spartans' first run with a sacrifice fly.

The Spartans then got three consecutive singles from Ty Hanchey, Stephen Baughan and Mason Velasquez to plate two more runs. Khie Simms capped the rally with an RBI groundout to give NSU a 5-2 lead.

A wild pitch allowed Albany to score a run in the top of the seventh. But NSU starter Seth Hockett notched two more strikeouts and a groundout to end the threat.

Danny Hosley tacked on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 6-3. But Albany wouldn't go away. In the eighth. Dolan Ocasal walked and took third on a two-out single by Alex Thul. A Spartan error allowed Ocasal to score. Josh Salandy came home from third on a balk before Daly blooped a single into shallow center field to score Marc Wangenstein with the tying run.

Kenny McLean (2-0) earned the win in relief for the Great Danes, pitching four scoreless innings without allowing a hit. Josue Cumba (1-1) was charged with the loss, allowing one run over two innings pitched.

Hockett took a no-decision for NSU despite a stellar performance. Making his first start since his freshman season, the junior righty pitched a career-high seven innings and struck out 10 batters, the most in his career. He allowed just five hits and three runs, two earned.

Collins went 2-for-5 for the Spartans, who finished with seven hits. Velasquez scored two runs. Daly went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Albany.
