Spartans Top Hawks in Thursday Afternoon Affair

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Norfolk State softball team earned a 6-2 win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference game at Hawk Field. The teams were scheduled to play just one game.

Due to the MEAC's decision on Thursday to suspend the rest of the spring sports season, NSU does not have any more games on its schedule for this season.

Norfolk State improved to 7-14 on the year thanks to a 10-hit game. The Spartans limited Maryland Eastern Shore (3-18) to just a two-run hit for the Hawks' only runs of the afternoon.

The Spartans started the game with three straight hits, but the Hawks got the next three batters out to end that threat. NSU also had runners on second and third in the second but couldn't score, and the Hawks got a two-run double from Tyanna Roberts in the bottom of the fourth for the first lead in the game.

Sophomore Gabby Vaughan hit an RBI single in the fifth to get NSU on the board, and freshman Loren Hudson followed two batters later with a homer to center for a 3-2 Spartan lead.

They added some insurance runs in the seventh. Junior Jazzmaine Hammond tripled to lead off the frame and scored on freshman Imani Moore's bunt single. Vaughan hit a sac fly for a 5-2 edge, and freshman Raven Blair tripled and scored on a single from sophomore Denisha Megginson for the final margin.

Hammond, Moore and senior Shelby DesChamps each had two hits. Junior Skylar Swain, meanwhile, improved to 3-5 on the season after pitching 3.2 innings of relief and allowing no runs on four hits.
