NORFOLK, Va. – In a career that has included many milestone moments, Norfolk State senior quarterback
Juwan Carter added another historic achievement to his personal list Tuesday as he was named the 2021 MEAC Offensive Player of the Year.
Carter becomes just the second Spartan to ever win the honor, following quarterback Chris Walley in 2011. Walley shared the honor that year with North Carolina A&T's Mike Mayhew.
The announcement came in Las Vegas as part of the National Football Foundation's yearly awards event.
Carter earned first-team All-MEAC honors when the all-conference teams were released two weeks ago. He led all MEAC signal-callers in passing yards (2,511), touchdown passes (21), completion percentage (63.8) and efficiency (150.4). He also ran for 390 yards and six touchdowns.
A four-time MEAC Offensive Player of the Week in 2021, Carter leaves NSU as the school's all-time leader with 9,271 passing yards, 10,248 total yards, 749 completions and 1,270 attempts. He was also one of 25 finalists for the Walter Payton Award, given annually to the top offensive player in all of Division I FCS. He finished 17
th in the voting.
Carter is also slated to participate in the HBCU Legacy Bowl, a first-year all-star game featuring top seniors from HBCU programs, in February in New Orleans.
"It is truly an honor to receive this award. All the hard work and dedication have paid off," Carter said. "I would like to thank my family for their endless support, my coaches past and present, my teammates and everyone who helped me become the person I am today."
