DURHAM, N.C. – Host North Carolina Central scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete a comeback and edge Norfolk State 7-6 on Sunday afternoon at Durham Athletic Park, earning a three-game sweep of the teams' weekend series.
Two NSU (2-8) errors and a balk allowed the Eagles (7-3) to plate the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth. A hit batter and the first Spartan error of the frame put two runners on base. Nick Fajardo stole second and an errant throw allowed pinch runner Jordan Varela-Payne to come home and knot the score at 6-all.
After an intentional walk and another hit batter loaded the bases, Fajardo scored on a two-out balk to give the Eagles their first lead of the game.
NSU threatened in the ninth. With two outs,
Trent Hanchey walked and stole second base. But Eagle reliever Scott Meylan got
Dylan Flint to fly out to end the game.
The Spartans led all the way until the eighth thanks to a fast start. NSU's first five batters of the first inning recorded hits against NCCU starter Shawn Runey.
Dionte Brown,
Alsander Womack and
Mason Velasquez all singled to load the bases. Senior designated hitter
Korey Singh unloaded them with a grand slam homer to right-center, his second homer in as many days.
Patrick Doran's two-run homer in the second cut the Eagles' deficit in half, but Brown and Singh hit run-scoring singles in the fifth to extend NSU's lead to 6-2.
Fajardo hit a two-run homer in a three-run fifth for the Eagles that brought the home team to within 6-5.
NSU outhit the Eagles 10-9 and stole six bases, but the Spartans also committed four errors in the loss.
Singh drove in a career-high five runs in a 2-for-3 day. Womack was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of steals. Brown was 2-for-5 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Hanchey walked three times and swiped three bases.
Danny Hosley took a no-decision for the Spartans. Making his first career start, the senior righty struck out six and walked none in 6.1 innings of work. He allowed eight hits and five runs.
Nolan Manzer (0-1) took the loss despite not allowing a hit in 1.1 innings of work. He gave up a pair of unearned runs.
Caleb McRoy (1-0) earned the win out of the Eagles' bullpen. He pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just one hit while striking out seven.
The Spartans return to action Tuesday when the host Longwood at 3 p.m. at Marty L. Miller Field.
